iPad Mini or Kindle: Which Is Actually Better for Outdoor Reading?

If you love reading outside, whether that’s on the beach, on a patio, or just in your backyard, you’ve probably run into the same problem: bright sunlight makes most screens nearly impossible to read. I tested the Kindle Basic and the iPad Mini side by side in direct sunlight to see which device actually handles glare better and which one is more comfortable for outdoor reading sessions.

Screen Glare in Direct Sunlight

Side by side in direct sun, the difference is obvious. The iPad Mini’s glossy screen picks up glare and reflections almost immediately, to the point where you end up tilting and repositioning constantly just to see the page. The Kindle’s e-ink display, on the other hand, doesn’t fight the sunlight at all, it actually uses it, the same way reading an actual paper book would.

Comfort for Reading Outdoors

Beyond glare, the Kindle is simply easier on the eyes for longer outdoor reading sessions. There’s no backlight fighting against the sun, no reflections to dodge, and no eye strain from a bright screen. The iPad Mini is a great device for a lot of things, but reading outdoors in bright light isn’t where it shines.

Final Verdict

If outdoor reading, especially in direct sunlight, is a priority for you, the Kindle is the clear winner here. The iPad Mini is still a fantastic multi-purpose device, but for pure comfort reading outside on a sunny day, e-ink wins every time.
